Open House at LOMS

Dear Parents:

We have had a wonderful start to our year and I would like to remind you that we are having open house tomorrow, September 2. The PTA portion of the program will begin at 6:15 with the large group meeting beginning at 6:30. There are several things we will cover at the general meeting, prior to our going to the classrooms. We have extended the first period time as there are some paperwork issues we will be requesting during that time. Please find the agenda for tomorrows meeting on the back of this letter with your child’s class schedule. Your child filled out this schedule with their classes, teacher’s name and room number. We will be available to help you find those rooms or provide you a schedule if you leave this letter at home. Due to class size and seating restrictions, we ask that you leave your children at home if possible. If you cannot make arrangements for your children, please feel free to bring them with you.

As always parking is at a premium. Teachers will be parking in the bus driver parking lot and you too may use this lot, but due to safety issues no one will be allowed to park in the bus lot. We need to keep the fire lanes open, but you may park on the street coming to the building that is not marked as a fire lane. You may also park on the street on the North side of the building that is not marked as a fire lane. There are no reserved parking spots at LOMS so if you can find an open spot, please feel free to park in that spot. If you can find another person to share a ride with, that would be helpful.

Once we have completed the scheduled visits with teachers, we will have a quick follow-up with teachers, in the commons so that you can schedule parent conferences. Parents please remember that this is a very public forum and your child’s information is private, so please do not ask teachers to discuss specifics about your child until you can set up a meeting time.

Girls Athletics Information

Physical Information
Any student who tries out for volleyball, basketball, tennis or track must have a physical form, completed by a physician, on file with the coaches before beginning tryouts. This is a UIL and FBISD policy. Physicals are good one year from the date completed by the doctor. Most girls get theirs in the summer and file it with the coaches prior to the start of the seasons.

Transportation

FBISD will not provide after school transportation for athletics this year. Girls must have transportation available for 6:00 pm pick-up. Transportation is not provided for morning practice. We do have transportation to and from all events. After athletic events, parents must provide transportation home from Lake Olympia or the event site.

Volleyball

2010 volleyball tryouts for 7th and 8th grade girls begin the first day of school. Physicals can be turned in this day. Tryouts will last 3 days for volleyball. If your student misses the first day, she can still try out the 2 or 3rd day as long as she has the completed physical and transportation. She should come prepared to tryouts with appropriate clothing and shoes. Girls will be picked up at 6:00 pm. Some of the teams will have morning practice.

Basketball

Basketball tryouts begin a day or two after volleyball season ends. Students should watch KRAL or ask their PE teachers for further information. Just like volleyball, a completed physical must be on file before starting tryouts. The season runs from late October to mid-February.

Tennis and Track

As soon as basketball is over, tennis and track seasons begin (around mid-February). Students can not compete in both activities; matches and meets are on the same days. Again, girls should watch for information to be posted on KRAL or ask PE teachers who will point them in the right direction.

Spring Final Exam Exemptions

In order to be exempt, students must attend school on exam days. Students who qualify for exemptions and are absent from school on exam days, will be required to make-up the exam during the summer or receive a zero on the exam.

If your child would like to take the semester exam in an attempt to improve his or her average, he or she simply needs to inform the teacher. The semester exam can not lower a semester average for an exempt student. See below for exemption guidelines.

•SIXTH GRADE EXEMPTIONS – English and Math exams only.

Must meet minimum TAKS standard (2100 scale score) and a grade of 80 or above in the applicable course. Must attend exempted class on test day to receive exemption. May is Internet Safety Month at LOMS

Lake Olympia is focusing on Internet Safety during the entire month of May. Please spend time discussing this important issue with your student.

We will be using materials from http://www.netsmartz.org/netparents.htm and recommend that you check out the resources.

It is our goal to help students understand the significance of their presence on the web. Topics of discussion should include:

1. Keep your personal information private - never share.

2. Anything put out on the internet - stays there - you can't take it back.

3. People are watching you

4. You are responsible for your actions

5. Law enforcement officials can trace anyone back to their computer.

6. If your student uses a social networking site - be sure it is set to private.

7. Cyber bullying is a crime punishable by the law.

Letter for 6th Grade Parents from our Nurse

Dear Parents:
On February 27, 2009, the Texas Legislature passed several revisions to the Texas Administrative Code. The Executive Commissioner on Health and Human Services approved these changes to the “Immunization Requirements for Children and Students Texas Public and Private Schools” on March 5, 2009. Middle School students will be affected by these revisions.
All sixth-grade students who will be entering seventh grade in the coming school year will be required to show proof of having received the following three vaccines:

1. The TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis)
2. The meningococcal vaccine
3. A second varicella vaccine (As in the past, a written statement from the parent or legal guardian or physician documenting a child’s positive history of varicella disease [chickenpox] is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine.)

Please check with your medical provider to see if your child has already had these immunizations. We will need and updated shot record as soon as possible to avoid delinquent records on the first day of school. According to our current school immunization records, the vast majority of sixth-grade students will need these shots. Therefore, it is a good idea to provide us with your child’s updated short record as soon as possible, so that your child’s immunization status will be in compliance with the new rules before summer vacation. Processing new records takes some time and school nurses do not work during the summer. Presenting an updated shot record on the day before school starts does not guarantee that the student’s records will be processed in time for the start of school. The earlier we receive the records, the better. By law, students will not be allowed to attend classes without evidence of having received these immunizations. Kids Helping Kids with PENNY POWER

Shared Dreams is a program that provides essential items to students in Fort Bend ISD who do not have adequate clothing, shoes, school supplies and other necessities.

On March 9, 10, and 11th the LOMS PTA will be coming to all three lunch periods to collect spare change and/or bills for the Shared Dreams program. Students who contribute will be able to enter their names into a drawing for many fun prizes.

Spring Thing Update

The Spring Thing is almost here. Bring your friends and kick off a great three day weekend!

Date: Friday, February 12th

Time: 6:00-9:00 pm

Location: Commons and the gym
Dress: Dressy casual (must be compliant with LOMS dress code)

This event is open to LOMS students only. Tickets for entry to the Spring Thing will be $5 per student if bought during the Presale; $10 per student the night of the event. Please bring exact change.

There is only one more $5 presale ticket day - Tuesday, Feb 9th during all lunches. If you’ve purchased a presale ticket, report to the table at the entrance that night to get your wristband and ticket for the drawings.

We will have a DJ, basketball, and concessions for purchase (food & drinks are not included in the entry ticket price). Soft drinks, water, candy, and chips will all cost $1. Pizza slices will be sold for $2, or 2 slices for $3. Tickets to enter drawings for door prizes or chances to silly string the principals will be $1 each. Each student will receive one ticket for the drawings as part of their paid admission.

The Somewhat True Tales of Robin Hood

The cast of “The Somewhat True Tales of Robin Hood” would like to invite everyone to see our play. The students have been working very hard on this play since October and we are very excited about everyone seeing the culmination of our hard work. The show will be Friday, February 5th and Saturday, Feb 6th at 7:30 in the commons. The price is $3 for students, children, and staff and $5 for adults. The play is approximately 1:45 min long including intermission. This play is truly a child of the students; we allowed them great creative control to encourage learning, including the attached poster

Standardized Dress for LOMS 2010 2011
Everyone is encouraged to vote on standardized dress for LOMS for the 2010 2011 school year. Click on the link above to express your opinion.

The PTA set an aggressive sales goal of $40,000 for our fall fundraiser and actually hit $44,000. Sales were pretty evenly divided across all three grade levels, so a big thanks to our 8th graders for stepping up this year.
Highlights:
*107 students will get to "silly string" the principals during lunch
*42 students will get to go on a limo ride/pizza outing, and
*14 students won a Touchscreen MP4 player
*Our top seller, Christopher Thomas, sold 61 items!

Through the years, Lake Olympia Middle School has been awarded nearly $27,457.62 in grants by the Fort Bend Education Foundation.

Established in 1992 to benefit students of Fort Bend ISD this non-profit organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors that includes local business, industry, and community leaders. The Foundation provides funds to support innovative academic projects and staff development activities. Some examples of the many grants funded to teachers include digital microscopes, math manipulatives, mobile science labs, big books, History Alive materials, and gardening systems. Since its inception, the Fort Bend Education Foundation has awarded over two million eight hundred thousand dollars in grants to Fort Bend ISD teachers and schools. Please consider supporting the Education Foundation by volunteering your time at any one of our fundraisers, adopting an angel gift, donating an auction item, or attending the annual gala in February. If you are looking for a great way to pay tribute to a teacher or loved one, consider making a donation to our Tribute Fund.

Dear 7th and 8th Grade LOMS Parents,

On Tuesday, September 8, 2009, President Obama will deliver a national address directly to students on the importance of education. The President will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. The address will air at 11:00 a.m. central time and will be broadcast live. Here at Lake Olympia, we will record the address and integrate it during our social studies classes. The 7th grade classes will view the address on September 9, 2009 and the 8th grade students will view the address on September 10th. Lake Olympia and Fort Bend ISD are not requiring students to view the address nor will we take any grades reflective of the address. We understand that some parents may not want their child/children to view the address so we are asking that you fill out the form below and return to your student?s social studies teacher by Tuesday, September 8th . for 7th grade and Wednesday, September 9th for 8th grade. If you choose for your child not to view the address, they will go to a supervised location and utilize the time for quiet study. As always, if you have any questions, please call the school.

The LOMS PTA provides the volunteer and financial support for a variety of activities to benefit the students and faculty. Some of the scholastic and extracurricular improvements provided by the PTA include agendas for every student, programs to strengthen curriculum, support for multicultural night, teacher appreciation activities and student field trips. On September 8, 2009, the library will kick off a new school wide reading program called Read It Forward. The purpose of the program is to encourage all of our students to read and discuss the same book. Sixty copies of the book, I, Q, by Roland Smith will be anonymously positioned into various places within the school building on Tuesday morning. Inside the book is a sticker with instructions for students to read the book, sign their name on the inside and on the Library wall, then pass it on to a classmate. We hope that each book will be passed on at least three times by the end of the program, November 19, 2009. Students who read the book are invited to post their names on the “Read It Forward” wall in the Library. Check the Library webpage for the school survey.

Students are required to have a signed AUP in order to use any computer in FBISD. Be sure both you and your student sign this form.

No handheld cell phones or any handheld electronic device may used while driving through school zones.
All seventh grade students must have their shots before coming to school. Students without their shot record will not be allowed to go to class.
Students cell phones at LOMS must be turned off and out of sight.

The LOMS PTA has been working hard this summer to make sure the 2009/10 school year gets off to a great start! We've recruited chairmen for most of the different board positions - and they've been busy selling ads so we can publish a Student Directory, signing up new PTA members at Mustang Camp, preparing Volunteer forms so you can be more involved with your child's school, and working out all the details for our fall Fundraiser. We do still have a couple of open positions on the board. If you are interested in getting involved, please call me to discuss opportunities.

We also hosted a "welcome back" breakfast for the LOMS staff last Friday morning. Thanks to all who donated items and helped set up and serve for this event. We appreciate our teachers, faculty and staff!

PTA is a partnership between the parents and teachers. When we work together, great things can happen for our students and our school. Please look in your first day of school folder and promptly return the PTA Membership and Volunteer forms. We would love for every parent to join the PTA and commit to volunteer as well. There are many opportunities to serve! Stay informed by bookmarking our web site at http://www.loms.txpta.org/. There you will find a list of the PTA Board Members as well as other useful information.

Fort Bend Fabulous! International Festival and Model Search

Fort Bend Fabulous! International Festival and Model Search now seeking models, volunteers, and entertainment groups. The 4th annual festival presented by the Fort Bend Education Foundation is scheduled to take place Saturday, November 7, 2009, from 10:00 am to 3:00 p.m. in Sugar Land Town Square. The event celebrates the tremendous diversity of cultures in our school district by highlighting their unique traditions, arts, and foods. The Fort Bend Education Foundation is partnering with Page Parkes Corporation to conduct a model search. Page Parkes is the largest model and talent agency in the southwest United States and has been instrumental in launching the careers of many famous faces. The model search is open to children in grades kindergarten through 12 residing in Fort Bend County. For application information email the Foundation at fbef@fortbend.k12.tx.us. We will accept applications on September 26th at Wheeler Field House located at 16403 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land. The model and talent search finale will take place from 12:00-1:00 during the festival. Representatives from Page Parkes will judge the contestants on the runway during a fashion show and on their speaking presentation. Six winners will each receive a scholarship to Page Parkes and a professional photo shoot complete with hair, makeup, and three looks. Volleyball Tryouts

At the beginning of the 2008 – 2009 school year, the Transportation Department initiated temporary bus service to those students residing on the east side of the Lake Olympia Parkway Bridge and within the “ineligible” or “walk zone” of the middle school campus. Temporary service was initiated as pedestrian and bicycle traffic was prohibited from crossing the bridge as a result of the overpass construction on Lake Olympia Parkway.

Please be informed that improvements to the infrastructure for the Lake Olympia Parkway Bridge are nearing completion. Motor vehicles may now use the twin bridges and repairs to the pedestrian access are near completion. Considering this fact, FBISD officials have determined that temporary bus service will no longer be available for the upcoming school year.

The Transportation Department will continue to provide temporary service for the remainder of this school year, but parents will need to plan for the 2009 – 2010 school year.

Our final PTA General Membership Meeting will be Thursday, May 28 at 7 pm in the LOMS Commons. We will be setting our budget for the next school year, voting on an increase to local PTA Membership dues and electing next year's PTA officers.

With regards to a change to our membership dues, the Bylaws would be amended as follows:
Article VII Members & Dues *Section 5. Each member of this Local PTA shall pay annual dues as determined by the organization. The amount of the dues shall include the portion of two dollars and twenty-five cents (2.25) per member payable to Texas PTA, the portion of one dollar and seventy-five cents (1.75) per member payable to the National PTA, and the Local PTA portion of $6.00 per member.

Letter from Principal Re: Swine Flu

Dear Parents and Students: As a precautionary measure, this information has been prepared for distribution to all families in the district by the Fort Bend ISD Departments of School Administration, Student Support Services, Safe and Secure Schools, and Community Relations and Partnerships. Fort Bend ISD is closely monitoring the preparations and response by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local public health officials who are investigating swine influenza cases in people in Texas and in other U.S. locations. The CDC recommends the following guidelines to avoid infection and stay healthy: •Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. •Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. •Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. •Stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others.As a precaution, all school nurses are monitoring any possible cases and anyone with flu-like symptoms. They are reporting this information daily to our County Health Department. We have not had any reported cases of students or staff with swine flu symptoms. TAKS - Week of April 27

Dear Parents and Guardians:

This letter is to notify you that all students at Lake Olympia Middle School will be administered the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) beginning on Monday with the LAT test for specifically identified students and Tuesday-Friday for all students, April 28th- May 1. This is an untimed test therefore students will have ample time to complete them.

6th and 7th Graders will take Math and Reading on Tuesday and Wednesday. 8th Graders will take Science and Social Studies on Thursday and Friday.

On testing days, students will not be allowed to report to their lockers, so please encourage your child to leave his/her backpack at home; otherwise, they will be confiscated. Students may only bring a book to read after the completion of their test.

In order to maintain strict test security, all students will eat sack lunches in the cafeteria on test days. Students will be provided sack lunches all four days in the cafeteria. Students will be escorted from their testing rooms at designated times to the cafeteria and closely monitored during “structured lunch” by our administrative team. Students are welcome to bring their own sack lunch; however, we will not be able to accept “delivered” lunches from parents, friends, and area restaurants to take to classrooms on the test days. Also, students will not be allowed to eat/drink snacks during the test. Finally, no classrooms will be disturbed in order to call for the early release of your child unless their entire class has completed testing and the teacher’s testing materials have been returned to the counseling department. Please plan appointments accordingly.

Also, please be reminded that we will strictly adhere to the district’s “cell phone policy” regarding electronics during testing. A copy of the policy can be found on the reverse side of this letter.

The TAKS is very important for all of our students, and a copy of the test results will be placed on their permanent record card. In order to ensure that your child performs to the best of his/her ability, please make sure they eat a healthy breakfast and have had plenty of rest the night before testing. To avoid the unnecessary anxiety that is associated with a late arrival in the morning, please be sure your child arrives each day by 8:30AM and is ready to begin the testing day.

As you may know, the Lake Olympia Middle School family lost one of its sixth-grade students, Alexis Olivio, in a tragic automobile accident in Mexico last Friday.

This news has saddened our staff and our student body, and our hearts and prayers go out to the family. You may want to discuss what has happened with your child. District crisis teams and our entire Lake Olympia staff have worked closely with our students who may need to talk.

KRAL at WATCHing Your Wellness Heath Fair in the Sugar Land Town Square

Yes, at the 3rd annual WATCHing Your Wellness Heath Fair. KRAL TV, one of the three groups from Lake Olympia Middle School performed. It took a lot of practice in the early mornings before school for us to come up with a concept of our performance, get our intro/exit down, and most of all, memorize our lines. Our intro covered the five letters of WATCH, Weight, Activity, Tobacco, Cholesterol, and High Blood Pressure. That was put all into an original song for our introduction and exit. The 6 of us (at different times) would go up and introduce the next performance. The rest of us roamed around the health fair seeing what other people we’re contributing to the health fair. We observed a lot! Mostly health companies, like the YMCA, Life Fitness, other school within Fort Bend ISD, and other various companies.
It was a great performance one of our best yet. Though most of us who managed this performance won’t be here, it’ll be even better next year.

Immunization Letter for 8th Grade Students

Dear Parents and Students:

This important information regarding changes to immunization requirements for students entering grades eight through 12 has been prepared for distribution to all families in the district by the Fort Bend ISD Departments of School Administration, Student Support Services and Community Relations and Partnerships.

Any student who has been identified as needing the 10-year tetanus/diphtheria booster should receive the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheris and acellular pertussis) booster instead of the Td (tetanus/diphtheria) booster. The Texas legislature passed new regulations defining required immunizations for school enrollment that became effective on March 5, 2009.

If you received a letter informing you that your child’s tetanus booster will be due, the immunization now required is the Tdap, not the Td, unless medically contraindicated.
If you would like to read the new regulations in detail, please go to file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/marie.mills/Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/OLK1/www.immunizetexas.com. This information can also be accessed by searching the Texas Administrative Code, Health Services, Communicable Diseases. The portion of the law that pertains to these students is as follows:

(-c) Grades 8-12. Beginning SY 2009-2010, students who have not already received the Tdap vaccine are required to receive one booster dose of Tdap when ten years have passed since the last dose of a tetanus-diptheria containing vaccine.

Since this requirement affects a large number of students, it is advisable to have the immunization done as soon as possible. If your child has already received this immunization, please send the updated shot record to the school nurse now. Processing immunization records takes time and school nurses do not work during the summer. A shot record delivered on the first day of school or the day before the first day of school does not guarantee that the records will be processed in time for the student to attend classes. Students will not be allowed to attend school if their immunization records are not compliant with the law.

Records may be faxed to 281-634-3579. You may email scanned or electronic records to 281-327-3532. Your medical provider may fax the records directly to the school nurse. It is a good idea to call or email the school nurse to confirm that the records were received.

Urgent Immunization Requirements Change by TEA

Dear Parents:

On February 27, 2009, the Texas Legislature passed several revisions to the Texas Administrative Code. The Executive Commissioner on Health and Human Services approved these changes to the “Immunization Requirements for Children and Students in Texas Public and Private Schools” on March 5, 2009. Middle School students will be affected by these revisions.

All sixth-grade students who will be entering seventh grade in the school year 2009-2010 will be required to show proof of having received the following three vaccines:

1. The Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis)
2. The meningococcal vaccine
3. A second varicella vaccine (As in the past, a written statement from the parent or legal guardian or physician documenting a child’s positive history of varicella disease [chickenpox] is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine.)

Please check with your medical provider to see if your child has already had these immunizations. We will need an updated shot record as soon as possible to avoid delinquent records on the first day of school. According to our current school immunization records, the vast majority of sixth-grade students will need these shots. Therefore, it is a good idea to provide us with your child’s updated shot record by mid-May, so that your child’s immunization status will be in compliance with the new rules before summer vacation. Processing new records takes some time and school nurses do not work during the summer. Presenting an updated shot record on the day before school starts does not guarantee that the student’s records will be processed in time for the start of school. The earlier we receive the records, the better. By law, students will not be allowed to attend classes without evidence of having received these three immunizations.
Records may be faxed to the school nurse at 281-634-3579 or emailed as a document or scanned copy to oscar.davis@fortbend.k12.tx.us.

In addition, all seventh- or eighth- grade students who have received a notification that they will need a tetanus diphtheria booster should receive the Tdap (tetanus, diptheria and acellular pertussis) immunization instead of the Td (tetanus diphtheria) unless medically contraindicated. There should be at least five years between doses of vaccine containing tetanus and diphtheria.

District Assessments

DA (District Assessment of Taught Curriculum) is the new district terminology used with regard to district level assessments. The DA may be used as either a formative or summative assessment in the core content areas. No longer does the district refer to a district-level assessment as a DAC (District Assessment of Curriculum).

At the middle school level, the DAs will be counted as an additional daily grade during the nine weeks grading cycle in which the DA is administered. At the end of the nine weeks grading cycle, the lowest daily grade will be dropped in the class that administered the DA. The DA daily grade will be an additional grade to the district required six daily grades within a nine weeks grading cycle.

Star Social Update

Parents, what a great night! We had close to 250 students participate in the social -- lots of dancing, socializing, eating, smiling and having fun. Students all received a chance to win one of our door prizes, which included gift cards, an IPOD dock, a digital picture keychain and much more. Thank you to all the parents who donated door prizes and their time to help make this a special event for the kids.

The food and drink committee would like to say "thank you" to all of those who helped out by securing or making donations as well as those who worked the concession tables on the night of the social. We couldn't have done it without you!

One of the highlights of the night was watching several lucky students get to "pie" the faculty. We had 5 wonderful volunteers - Mr. Boles, Mr. Viamontes, Ms. Tyner, Mr. Williams and Mr. Shipley. You guys were great sports, and yes, it was all captured on many cell phones.

I would also like to acknowledge our corporate sponsors:
